Every few months we’ll be addressing common beliefs and queries our welfare team receives. This article focuses around two common myths we hear on claiming benefits.
Myth # 1
I am in receipt of a State Pension and Pension Credit, Housing Benefit and Council Tax Benefit so I would not be entitled to any further help.
If you have a health condition which affects how you manage day to day you may be entitled to claim Attendance Allowance, at either £61.85 or £92.40 a week. Also, if awarded Attendance Allowance, and on Pension Credit and living alone, you may then also be entitled to a further Severe Disability Premium of £69.40 a week.
Attendance Allowance is one of the most underclaimed benefits. People often feel ‘I can manage’, but actually may still be entitled to Attendance Allowance, or that you would have to have a carer coming in (no, you can spend the money on whatever you want) or that you have too much in savings – but Attendance Allowance is not means tested, Mostly, however, the application form can seem very long and very daunting. Just by talking to one of our Welfare Benefit Advisors they can help complete and send off the form for you.
Myth #2
I am unemployed and live in rented accommodation. I receive Universal Credit payment to cover my living expenses and pay most of my rent. I struggle with my mental and [or] physical health but probably can’t claim anything else.
Are you well enough to seek work, or to undertake employment? If you struggle with either your mental and/or physical health, you may be excused from actively seeking work by the DWP. If you are very unwell, you may be entitled to an extra Universal Credit payment of £354.28 per month. You will need to be assessed by the DWP, provide them with ‘fit notes’ from your GP, complete a UC50 form, and provide evidence for a DWP medical assessment.
