Universal Credit rates are changing this year.
The standard amount – which is the basic rate of a UC award calculated based on your age and relationship status – is rising slightly in line with the November 2024 government budget.
The two-child cap, previously applied to the child element of a UC award, is being abolished, meaning your award could increase if you are responsible for three or more children.
Unfortunately, the sickness-related element of UC, which describes whether you are unable to work (LCW) or undertake work-related activity (LCWRA), is going to be subject to cuts. Those already receiving an additional amount for LCWRA will not be affected by these planned changes. However, most people awarded LCWRA from 6th April onwards will receive only £217.26 per month — around half of the current rate.
Earlier proposed changes to Personal Independence Payment have been paused, meaning no changes are currently planned. ABS will continue to monitor this.
If you are concerned about how these changes will affect you, please speak to a case worker via help@absnet.org.uk.

As we plan for the year ahead, ABS will continue to focus on our commitment to supporting architectural professionals. This will involve ensuring that we are aware of the level of need within the community and increasing the scope of support accordingly. We will be concentrating on improving awareness of our services. Sadly, we expect to see a rise in those with long-term health needs experiencing financial hardship as a result of the changes to welfare benefits.
We have expanded our team and our provision of expert support for those with health needs and disabilities, aiming to mitigate the impact of the drop in income caused by these changes.
