Guide to Universal Sanctions
Welfare Benefits Advice
ABS can refer you to an experienced, independent Welfare Benefits Advisor who can advise and support if you think you are going to be sanctioned or have already been sanctioned. Please contact our Welfare Team if you need this type of support. It is important to do so as soon as possible as there are time frames within which you can challenge a DWP sanction decision.
Financial Support
If your benefit has been reduced because of a sanction, please contact us as we may be able to arrange financial support for a period.
Sometimes the DWP will agree a Hardship Payment if you are struggling financially because of a sanction. However, this payment will have to be paid back from future monthly benefit entitlement, meaning you will have less money over a longer period of time. We recommend you do not request a Hardship Payment but instead contact us first to see if we can provide extra financial support. Regular monthly support from ABS will not affect your Universal Credit award.
